East Harlem's Dear Mama Coffee opens second spot on Columbia's Manhattanville campus; Morningside Coffee closes

May 15, 2018

Over the weekend two Harlem spots announced big moves.

After a little more than a year in business, biscuit purveyor Morningside Coffee at 547b Malcolm X Boulevard between 137th and 138th Streets shuttered abruptly.

"Unfortunately today was Morningside Coffee's last day of business. I want to thank you for all your past business and support. We are very thankful and grateful in having you as our loyal customer," reads a notice that was posted Sunday on its Instagram account.

No reason was given for the closure.

The small but cheery spot offered tempting buttermilk biscuit sandwiches served with scrambled eggs or fried chicken. Coffee, including basic drip, espressos, cappuccinos and flat whites, was the other big menu item.

One commenter on Instagram wrote, "Nooooooooo!!! I was so happy when you guys popped up! Been a loyal customer since your first day!! Great coffee, great food and great people. You will be missed dearly!!"

Over on Columbia's new Manhattanville campus, East Harlem's Dear Mama Coffee opened its second outpost today. "We begin serving in the lobby of the #jeromelgreensciencecenter @columbia @manhattanvilleharlem TOMORROW MORNING serving some delicious @devocionusa!!! Come see us 9am-3pm," announces a caption that was posted Sunday on the coffee shop's Instagram account.

The accompanying photo shows a new espresso cart inside the Jerome L. Green Science Center on Broadway between 129th and 130th Streets–one of the first buildings to open on Columbia's new Manhattanville campus.

Welcome to West Harlem, Dear Mama Coffee!
