Your uptown weekend: Day of the Dead celebrations at El Museo, visits to Open House NY landmarks, and more

October 18, 2019

From a Day-of-the-Dead-inspired musical procession in East Harlem to a chance to enter some of uptown's typically closed-off landmarks, there's lots of great stuff to check out this weekend. Take your pick from these four standout events:

Congo in Harlem 11 film series

Maysles Documentary Center, 343 Malcolm X Blvd between W 127th and W 128th Sts

Through Sunday, Oct 20

The 11th annual Congo in Harlem film series kicks into high gear this weekend with photo exhibits, Q&As, and movies that encourage you to learn about the beauty as well as the challenges facing this huge country in the heart of Africa. It all caps off with "Cold Case Hammarskjöld," a documentary investigating the mysterious 1961 death of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, a man who was committed to helping newly independent African countries.

Open House New York Weekend

Friday, Oct 18-Sunday, Oct 20

This weekend is your once-a-year chance to explore city architecture that isn't always accessible to the public, and uptown's got its fair share of amazing spots. Here's just a taste: the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge, the landmarked Great Hall at City College, and the 1908 Fort Tryon Park Cottage next to the stunning Heather Garden.

Super Sábado: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration

El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Ave between E 104th and E 105th Sts

Saturday, Oct 19, 11am-5pm; FREE

El Museo's colorful Day of the Dead celebrations kick off with a musical procession by Danza Azteca Chichimeca that runs from Central Park’s Dana Discovery Center (Fifth Ave and E 110th St) to the museum's courtyard. There's also a calavera paper mask decorating workshop right after. And don't forget to stop by the museum's cafe to see the magical community altar installed by artist Cievel Xicohtencatl.

Uptown Nights: Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh

Harlem Stage, 150 Convent and 135th Street

Saturday, Oct 19 7:30pm-10pm

Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Mumu Fresh brings her powerful lyrics to Harlem Stage, performing material from her recent album, "The Healing."
