The gates on Columbia University's Morningside campus have been closed to the general public since October 2023, when student protests over the war in Gaza first erupted.
But after complaints about the ongoing closure, including a class action lawsuit earlier this year, Columbia has introduced a new program that allows neighbors who live in Morningside Heights and West Harlem to apply for access.
Anyone who lives in the following area can do so: from 135th to 103rd Streets, Riverside Drive to Convent Avenue/Morningside Drive/Columbus Avenue ("the geographical area may be changed depending on demand and other factors," reads an additional note).
The Campus Access Form for Neighbors asks for your name, address and the reason you are requesting access. Visiting the campus to show ID will be a further step.
