There's a new Swedish pizza and craft beer spot in Washington Heights with a ghoulish theme.
Döden, meaning death in Swedish, just opened at 3766 Broadway between W 156th and W 157th Streets, serving brick-oven pies topped with ingredients like potatoes and Dutch cheese. Drinks focus on craft beer and wine.
An offshoot of a pub in Stockholm owned by the Swedish microbrewery Omnipollo, the spot is run by a team that includes local coffee shop maven Haitem Weslati.
While the Swedish vibe extends to the colorful Scandinavian furniture, there's plenty to eat that's more reminiscent of Italy—or even Latin America.
The handwritten menu on the wall includes pizzas topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan as well as Calabrian salami or chimichurri.
Beer on tap comes from the likes of Threes Brewing, Burlington Beer, and, still en route, Omnipollo.
The death theme is carried through to the decor, with hanging art resembling bloodshot eyeballs and skeletons, plus a brick-oven pizza in the back painted like a purple ogre.
For now the restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday 5pm-11pm.
