New free modular restroom from Throne Labs in Washington Heights
A free smart restroom designed by Throne in Washington Heights.

New York City is testing new free public restrooms throughout the five boroughs, and a few just landed in Upper Manhattan.

The smart toilets, made by Throne Labs, were recently installed in public plazas in Harlem and Washington Heights and are open between 7am and 10pm.

Users can access them via text message, QR code, the Throne Bathroom Network app, or tap cards that are available from nearby community partners.

The modular restrooms have a ten-minute time limit, after which doors open automatically.

The city has also installed a separate free toilet in West Harlem that works differently from the one by Throne Labs; it is self-cleaning and opened at the press of a button when TCU visited.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the pilot program earlier this year, promising to expand access to public bathrooms across NYC.

The uptown locations are, from south to north:

• Central Harlem Malcolm X Plaza, W 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard

• West Harlem 12th Avenue and St. Clair Place*

• Washington Heights Plaza Alianza Dominicana, W 165th Street and Audubon Avenue

*Note: The free restroom at this location operates differently from the Throne Labs design.
