Weekend wish list: a free French film series, Malcolm X's lost chapter, unicorns, and more

Sections of the "lost chapter" of Malcolm X's autobiography are on view at the Schomburg

So many great things to see and do uptown, and never enough time. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Blackness in French and Francophone Film

Through Friday, November 16

This film series at Columbia showcases movies exploring the black experience–from documentaries to feature-length flicks–by women directors of African descent. Free and open to the public!

Only After the Deepest Darkness: The "Lost" Chapter & Manuscript of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X"

Through Saturday, November 10

Earlier this year, the Schomburg acquired the "lost chapter" of Malcolm X's autobiography, and tomorrow's your last chance to take a peek at sections of the text on view in the front lobby. Saturday is also the center's open house–the perfect excuse to explore Harlem's amazing library devoted to black history.

In Pursuit of the Narwhal and the Unicorn

Saturday, November 9, 2pm-4:30pm

This free lecture at the Met Cloisters explores the history of one-horned creatures, including the narwhal and the unicorn. Here's a preview: One is real, the other is only a myth.

The Harlem Pop-Up Collective at Silvana

Sundays, November 11-December 23, 10am-5pm

For the next seven Sundays, Harlem cafe Silvana will be hosting a group of local vendors in its downstairs space selling fashion, jewelry, beauty, home, art, vintage merch and more. Stop by and shop for a range of unique holiday gifts in one place.
