TCU message board: community board applications are here, the latest on Hamilton's Bakery, and more

Updated: Mar 19, 2020

And now a few messages from local organizations and readers that have reached out in the past weeks:

• Want to have a real impact on what happens in your neighborhood and solve issues relating to parks, transportation and more? It all comes down to joining your local community board, which is now accepting applications (the deadline is February 8, 2019). April Adams, the community liaison for Community Boards 7 & 9, sends this handy link: nyc.gov

• After a successful year of events at a former garage at 1850 Amsterdam Avenue, contemporary music and performance art initiative Qubit is moving and raising funds to help pay for its new rent. Watch the inspirational video here, then make sure to donate and "help keep New York weird": qubitmusic.com

• A reader has written in asking for more intel on her "go-to spot for working," Hamilton's Bakery + Coffee Bar, which has been closed since October of last year. According to owner Jenna, Hamilton's shuttered for "a kitchen remodel that turned into a building plumbing redo." The local coffee hangout should be opening back up in the next few week (updated 1/25: it reopened this morning). "Oh my gosh, have we missed everyone!!!" writes Jenna.

• Volunteer group Jacob H. Schiff Playground Neighborhood Association would love to see the empty retail space at 1520 Amsterdam Avenue and 135th Street (recently vacated by a Chinese takeout spot) occupied by a business such as a coffee shop or bakery and is spreading the word. Here's the full real estate listing: ksrny.com
