Enjoy nine full blocks without traffic during this year's Car Free Earth Day on St. Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights. The streets will be lined with performances, dance classes, and puppet shows, as well as booths from earth-friendly organizations. Citi Bike will be there, too, giving out free one-day passes.

Just in time for National Independent Bookstore Day, the South Bronx is getting a shiny new locally-owned bookstore. Incredibly, it will be the only indie bookstore in the whole borough. The brainchild of Bronx native Noëlle Santos, the shop will offer books in the front (sample section: Dear White People) and glasses of wine in the back. Stop by for the ribbon-cutting at noon, plus refreshments and a turn inside the photo booth.

Come help beautify the gardens of founding father Alexander Hamilton's 1802 home, the Grange, as part of National Park Week. The cleanup will be followed by a botanist-led discussion of Hamilton's famous Sweetgum trees and an author-led talk about "American Eden," a biography of Hamilton's doctor, David Hosack.
