Holiday gift guide: shopping the 125th Street sidewalk vendors

Prefer to do all your shopping in one place—and in the open air? Harlem's famous retail strip, especially the area between Lenox and St. Nicholas Avenues, is lined with street vendors selling everything from "Harlem" t-shirts to fake designer handbags. Here are some current standouts—most of them no more than $10. From east to west:

Waist beads

Vendor location: south side of 125th St between Lenox Ave and Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd

If sheer quantity is any guide, African-style waist beads are currently one of the hottest items on the strip.

African-print face masks

Vendor location: north side of 125th St between Lenox Ave and Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd

A colorful African-print face mask to add much-needed cheer in the winter months ahead.

African crafts

Vendor location: north side of 125th St between Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Frederick Douglass Blvds

Beautiful crafts—from masks to decorative objects—straight from Africa.

"Harlem" tote from Dohanyc

Vendor location: south side of 125th St between Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Frederick Douglass Blvds

Just the thing to help navigate the city's plastic bag ban in style.
