A new coffee shop has opened on 125th Street, and though the name is novel, the team behind it is a familiar one in Harlem.
I Like It Black at 409 W 125th Street near Morningside Avenue is the newest venture from the family that runs Make My Cake, the beloved bakery with locations at 2380 Adam Clayton Powell Jr (recently renamed Ma Smith's Dessert Cafe to honor of the family matriarch) and 775 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side.
Owner Aliyyah Baylor and her mother, who debuted the first bakery 26 years ago, plan to open their third location in the space next door to the cafe in the coming weeks.
The month-old java joint features lattes and other espresso-based drinks using beans from Black and Brown-owned roasters like Merge Coffee Company, which will be rotated out after a few months.
There's also nitro cold brew from Intelligentsia and freshly-made treats including French toast muffins and cinnamon buns.
The company’s beloved cakes and pies will be sold in the adjacent space when it opens.
